JOB: Research Associate in Quantum Error Correction

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is currently advertising for the following research post:

Research Associate in Quantum Error Correction
Department of Physics and Astronomy
Fixed-term for 30 months with a start date of 1 August 2018 or as soon as
possible thereafter.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate in Quantum Error Correction in the LDSD Group at Sheffield working with Dr. Earl Campbell. The post forms part the QCDA European network on Quantum Code Design and Architecture. QCDA is funded through the QUANTERA programme running from 2018 to 2021 with nodes in Sheffield, London, Delft, Paris and Munich. Further details on QCDA can be found at www.qcda.eu.

The successful candidate will direct, develop and execute research towards the goals of the QCDA network, and in particular Work-package 2 (Universal Logic and Compiling) and Work-package 1 (Qubit codes and decoders). Topics of interestinclude: Topologicaland LDPC codes (especially hypergraph and homological  product codes) and decoders; Computation by code deformation; Transversal gates in LDPC codes;and distillation of exotic magic states. The post holder will attend network meetings and also be responsible for co-organising some network events and workshops.

You should possess, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in the theory of quantum computing or a related field. Previous experience in the quantum error correction or fault tolerant quantum computing would be desirable. Candidates may have an undergraduate background in any relevant area such as Physics, Mathematics,Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
