SUMMER PLACEMENT: Sheffield Solar research group

The Sheffield Solar research group in the Department of Physics and Astronomy currently have a research contract with National Grid to calculate national and regional photovoltaic power flows on the electricity transmission network – to “nowcast” PV power flows. These calculations will be used to assist in electricity demand forecasting and to allow for more renewable generation on the network. We also host a national database of PV generation from different installations across the UK. Please have a look at these services on our website:

http://www.solar.sheffield.ac.uk/pvlive/

We are looking to hire a part time placement student to assist in the development of the PV nowcasting platform and service and in particular to undertake data processing and analysis tasks. This will involve the checking, uploading, visualisation and interpretation of a variety of data sources relevant to the work. Different software packages will be used and training in these will be given. The work is flexible and can be a combination of vacation work and part time work during the semester time. We anticipate that this work will take the place of a period of summer placement work totalling 6-8 weeks at around 25 hours per week and then continuing in the semester time at around 10 hours/week throughout the year.  The work schedule is to be negotiated. Pay will be at grade 5 on the university's scale.

We are looking for the following skills in prospective candidates:
  • A strong computational skill-set through mathematical ability, programming knowledge and/or a strong desire to become competent at programming along with an ability to demonstrate organised and logical approaches problem solving.
  • A good understanding of basic physics and the use of statistics within physics to understand uncertainty and errors.
  • Evidence of effective team working and oral and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of enthusiasm for the project.
To apply please write a covering letter and attach a CV and email solarfarm@sheffield.ac.uk

The closing date will be 4pm Friday 27th April 2018 and we will hold interviews early May 2018.
