Summer Teaching Internship Opportunities - Notre Dame High School

Notre Dame High School's Internship Programme is a successful programme that gives penultimate year Maths and Physics undergraduates a school experience that enables them to find out what working in a school is really like and that encourages them to make a decision to apply for teacher training. We are all facing recruitment challenges in these subjects and this is a worthy initiative to help address this. To give you an idea of the need for this in our region, there are currently only 9 students in the whole of South Yorkshire training to be a Physics teacher. When you consider that there are 70-80 secondary schools in South Yorkshire, you can appreciate the severity of the shortage - we need to be engaged in activities that encourage more good people into the profession.
The interns are paid by the DfE to participate in the programme and they are expected to take on various jobs and tasks during their time in school. Interns last year ran STEM clubs, worked with groups of students from KS3 all the way through to KS5, supported students with UCAS applications, helped create resources, took part in trips and even helped with marking end of year exams! The interns get  experience of supporting in lessons, working with small groups or even taking a small part of a lesson, but it is made clear to the interns that they are expected to be useful to the school as well as gaining experience for themselves.

Last year saw a very positive response from both interns and placement schools, and a number have gone on to apply to teacher training which demonstrates the success of the programme. There is an in-depth induction programme that includes a variety of content, including professional behaviours. 

Host schools will:

• Plan a programme for the intern(s) that gives a realistic taste of life as a teacher
• Contact intern(s) before placement and share a draft programme with them – make them feel welcome!
• Provide Safeguarding training specific to the school
• Host intern(s) for 4 weeks starting 17th June 2019
• Hold a review with the intern(s) after 2 weeks
• Let us know if there are any problems

International Women's Day 2022 #BreakTheBias

  International Women's Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. This year we are called upon to  #BreakTheBias . From the International Women's Day 2022 website:  "Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. Sharp Laboratories of Europe (SLE) (www.sle.sharp.co.uk) is an integral part of Sharp Corporation of Japan. At SLE research is conducted into future generations of display technology, an area in which Sharp Corporation is a world market leader. The available 12 month placement is for a physicist to join a small and innovative team, part of a larger, inter-disciplinary displays group.
