FUNDED PhD: Microscopy and machine leaning project on soft materials

PhD project title: 'Unspinning Spider Silk’s Strength via nanoscale experimental reconstruction of a silk fibres processing history'
Recruiter: University of Sheffield | Department of Materials Science and Engineering
Closing date: Thursday, February 15, 2018

Project Description:
A fully funded studentship including fees and stipend of £14,553 p.a. for three years is available to work on “Unspinning Spider Silk’s Strength via nanoscale experimental reconstruction of a silk fibres processing history”

This project forms an integral part of a larger EPSRC funded project: SEE MORE: SECONDARY ELECTRON EMISSION - MICROSCOPY FOR ORGANICS WITH RELIABLE ENGINEERING-PROPERTIES

You will be embedded in a group of researchers, working with different industrial partners, as well as benefiting from additional personal development (e.g. for media training, international & inter-disciplinary collaborations).

Your specific research contribution will be in implementing and applying machine learning to Imaging and Spectral Data Analysis to novel scanning electron based characterisation techniques, pioneered in Sheffield as well to advanced mechanical test data. This will enable you to link extracted structural and chemical information to mechanical behavior on multiple length scales with the aim of establishing a mechanical model of spider silk fibers, and ultimately, design rules for men-made complex hierarchical materials. You will have access to state-of the-art equipment, unique to Sheffield and a wide network of international collaborators.
