The Noise and Vibration Division (NVDiv) of the Royal Air
Force Centre of Aviation Medicine are essentially acoustic consultants for the
RAF. We undertake occupational and environmental noise and vibration surveys
and act as a focal point for expert advice for anyone within the RAF who
requires information. We also carry out
work for the Ministry of Defence, the Army, the Royal Navy and NATO.
We are a small friendly Division
and rely heavily on teamwork. We are predominately
Civilian employees (Civil Servants) although we work very closely with the
RAF. Placement students are treated the
same as permanent staff and are given similar tasks and responsibilities. This
is not a “tea-making” placement, but instead you will be given projects to
carry through from start to finish including planning, undertaking and
eventually leading survey teams, measure and analyse data, report writing and
some administrative support work. We are probably the most well equipped
acoustic consultancy in the UK and you will be trained to use most, if not all
of our equipment. The Ministry of
Defence also runs a number of courses on a range of topics, from IT skills
through to Health and Safety and Project Management, which you will have access
to.
Our survey work takes us all over
the UK, from the Shetland Isles down to the tip of Cornwall and sometimes
overseas. Although the majority of your
time will be office based, you must enjoy travelling and be willing to travel
regularly within your placement. When on survey we can work long hours, but
when based in the office, standard days are 8:30 to 17:00 with approximately an
hour for lunch. A flexible working system operates, allowing staff to vary working
hours to fit their own personal circumstances. This is normally offered after a
3-month probation period.
RAF Henlow is in
Bedfordshire. Local towns (10 mins drive)
include Biggleswade and Hitchin. The
larger towns nearby are Bedford and Stevenage (20 mins), with Milton Keynes and
Luton further out (45 mins). The base
has excellent facilities to which, as a sandwich student, you will have
access. These include a well-equipped
gymnasium with nominal entrance fees.
If you are interested in a
placement with the NVDiv, please supply a CV and a brief covering letter to samantha.reynolds393@mod.gov.uk. All applications must be received by 08 January 2019. If applying through your placement tutor, you
must check what date they require your application by, in order for them to
forward any CVs to us by that date.
Initial plans are to interview at
RAF Henlow early February 2019. Please advise us if this clashes with your exam
timetable. The only criteria we request is that you are enthusiastic, have a
current driving licence and are studying for a related scientific degree
(Acoustics, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering etc).
If
there is anything you wish to ask, please do not hesitate to contact Sam Reynolds on the email address above. .
