PhD/EngD project available with AMRC and The University of Sheffield - "Investigating the interactions of metalworking fluids and its additives with aerospace alloys."

An industrially funded PhD/EngD project is available with the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and The University of Sheffield - "Investigating the interactions of metalworking fluids and its additives with aerospace alloys."

The project is funded by Italmatch Chemicals, a leading innovative Chemical Group, specialising in Performance Additives. A research programme working in partnership with Italmatch offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with a primary constituent supplier who can offer insight into cutting performance and fluid chemistry alongside possible future career opportunities.

The cutting fluid is an important, and much overlooked part, of machining. Additives, manufactured by Italmatch, are used in the fluid but often it is not clear why and how certain additives increase performance and fluid life. We need to understand the interactions of MWF additives with materials and surfaces within the cutting zone. Better tool life and surface quality can be achieved using certain additives. It is therefore important to understand the mechanical and chemical behaviour between additives and surfaces. You would be working primarily within the AMRC but also collaborating with the PhD students in the Leonardo Centre for Tribology in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

We are offering:
·        Fully-funded postgraduate research study for four years (starting Sep.2019)
·        Tax-free stipend of £18,000 per year, plus all tuition fees paid
·        Experience working with a world-leading company – Italmatch Chemicals
·        A launch-pad for a rewarding career in high-value manufacturing
Applicants must from the UK/EU and have, or expect to get, a 1st or good 2:1 degree (or Masters with Merit) in a relevant science or engineering subject such as Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or Physics. You should be enthusiastic about research with an interest in technology development and innovation in manufacturing.
