JOB: Senior Editor, Nature Energy

Job Title: Locum Associate or Senior Editor
Department: Nature Energy
Location: London, UK

Nature Energy, a new journal from Nature Research, publishes high-quality research related to all aspects of energy generation, storage and management. Launched in January 2016, Nature Energy’s scope includes both the natural and social sciences, similar to the highly successful Nature Climate Change.

We now have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Locum Associate or Senior Editor for an initial period of 6 months, with the possibility of extension. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to help shape the future of a young academic journal. The candidate must have a PhD, and preferably postdoctoral experience, with a strong research record in an area of solar energy or energy materials research. Editorial experience would be beneficial, but is not required.

The successful applicant will play an important role in determining the representation of their field in the journal, and will work closely with the other editors on the on-going development of Nature Energy and all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, commissioning and editing of Reviews and News & Views, and writing for the journal. A key aspect of the job is liaising with the scientific community through laboratory visits and international conferences.

This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position. Broad scientific knowledge and training, excellent literary skills, the ability to absorb new areas of research, and a keen interest in the practice and communication of science are prerequisites. The successful candidate must, therefore, be dynamic and outgoing and have excellent interpersonal skills. The salary and benefits will be competitive, reflecting the critical importance and responsibilities of this position.

The position will be based in our London office.

Applicants should provide the following:
  •     a CV (including their class of degree and a brief account of their research and other relevant experience);
  •     a brief cover letter explaining their interest in the post and their salary expectation;
  •     a selection of 5–8 articles from the recent scientific literature that you feel capture the most important recent developments in solar energy research (provide the full reference and a link to the article, and give a brief rationale for your choice);
  •     a News & Views style piece (600 words or less) on a recent paper from the energy literature.
Closing date: 5th March 2018
