JOB: Research Associate in Muon Tomography (Department of Physics and Astronomy)

Grade 7, £30,688- £38,833 per annum

We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate in Muon Tomography to join the Particle Physics and Particle Astrophysics group in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. You will join a collaborative project involving our group and scientists from the Industrial University of Santander (Colombia). The project involves modelling of cosmic-ray muons to investigate the structure of volcanoes in South America and monitor their activity.

The successful candidate will have, or be about to obtain, a PhD in the area of geophysics. Good knowledge of volcanic structures is expected, in particular for volcanoes in Colombia, and some experience in programming for geophysics. Previous work with modelling the structure of volcanoes will be an advantage.

The post holder will work alongside Prof Vitaly Kudryavtsev on building computer models of volcanoes for further muon transport through these volcanoes for periods of different activity.
