PhD/EngD project available with AMRC and The University of Sheffield - "Investigating the interactions of metalworking fluids and its additives with aerospace alloys."

An industrially funded PhD/EngD project is available with the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and The University of Sheffield - "Investigating the interactions of metalworking fluids and its additives with aerospace alloys." The project is funded by Italmatch Chemicals, a leading innovative Chemical Group, specialising in Performance Additives. A research programme working in partnership with Italmatch offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with a primary constituent supplier who can offer insight into cutting performance and fluid chemistry alongside possible future career opportunities. The cutting fluid is an important, and much overlooked part, of machining. Additives, manufactured by Italmatch, are used in the fluid but often it is not clear why and how certain additives increase performance and fluid life. We need to understand the interactions of MWF additives with materials and surfaces within the cutting zone. Better tool life and surface quality...

Alien life could be found in solar systems where stars have been pushed together, according to new research

Bethany Wootton, the lead author of this article , is now working as a physics outreach intern at the University of York.  Planetary systems can be harsh environments in their early history. The young worlds orbit suns in stellar nurseries, clusters of stars where violent encounters are commonplace. None of this makes it easy for life to get going, but now astronomers at the  University of Sheffield  find one positive of this tumultuous period. A model developed by undergraduate student Bethany Wootton and Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellow Dr Richard Parker looks at how the habitable zone – the region around a star where the temperature allows liquid water to exist – changes around pairs of stars, so-called binary systems. The two scientists discovered that an encounter with a passing third star may squeeze the binary pair together, expanding the habitable zone in the process. Their results appear in a new paper in the journal  Monthly Notices of the Roy...

Why I'm thinking about employability during my first year of university

He may have only just finished his first year but Jonathan Frost is already doing all he can to prepare himself for the job market. He explains why he's putting his CV ahead of his studies  'Getting involved in clubs and societies in his my year has strengthened my skill set,' says Jonathan Frost.  Having just completed my first year, I wouldn't say that employability is high on most first year students' priorities or, for some, is even recognised as a priority at all. Most students value their academic progress or social life, and with good reason, but what is the purpose of university if not for further equipping students for the job market? With many universities set to charge £9,000 a year for tuition fees, the university experience should be about getting value for money from day one. This means leaving with more than a degree after an expensive few years. A degree alone is no longer enough to get a return on investment. The advice I receive...
